According to Farm Aid, 5 million family farms have been lost since the 1930's. Most farms today are not family farms, and their future is very much in jeopardy. This story is a personal account of one new family farmer on his journey to establishing a farming business.

  • Thanks for sharing this. My wife and I are bootstrapping our way into farming. We bought a house on a double lot in an urban area just outside the city limits. VERY low mortgage, we're allowed to raise chickens, and we're near several farmers markets. This year we're trying to get plots for market gardens, and we got a truck so we can haul more chickens to the processor. We also got inspected to sell eggs. Working as a landscaper, I've been hauling leaves and grass clippings home to compost.

  • That's great! We need small farmers everywhere! What part of the country are you in?

  • Columbus, Ohio. There's a strong market here for organic, locally grown food. It just takes time time to break into it without a lot of money. I just discovered your YouTube posts today. I'm enjoying the series on the Organic Dairyman!

  • Thanks! Jon Bansen had some great insights on industrial vs. organic farming! Check out 'food network: community supported agriculture'. Laura started out small and was able to grow due to becoming a CSA!
