Giuseppe Verdi - Alzati... Eri tu (from Un ballo in maschera)

Alzati; lŕ tuo figlio
A te concedo riveder. Nell'ombra
E nel silenzio, lŕ,
Il tuo rossore e l'onta mia nascondi.
Non č su lei, nel suo
Fragile petto che colpir degg'io.
Altro, ben altro sangue a terger dčssi
L'offesa!
Il sangue tuo!
E lo trarrŕ il pugnale
Dallo sleal tuo core,
Delle lagrime mie vendicator!

Eri tu che macchiavi quell'anima,
La delzia dell'anima mia;
Che m'affidi e d'un tratto esecrabile
L'universo avveleni per me!
Traditor! che compensi in tal guisa
Dell'amico tuo primo la fé!
O dolcezze perdute! O memorie
D'un amplesso che l'essere india! . . .
Quando Amelia sì bella, sì candida
Sul mio seno brillava d'amor!
È finita, non siede che l'odio
E la morte nel vedovo cor!
O dolcezze perdute, o speranze d'amor!

It was you who besmirched that soul
The delight of my soul
You who confided in me and In a
hateful moment poisoned the world for me!
Traitor! Who repaid in such a way
The trust of your once friend
O lost delights! O memories of an
embrace which made one's being godlike.
When Amelia so beautiful and so pure
On my chest shone with love.
It is over, nothing but hatred and
death remain in my widowed heart.
O lost delights' O hopes of love!

  • Thanks for the translation!

  • Dmitri is a good singer. But stating that he is a Verdian baritone is absurd. I am done .

  • @promopera Lol. You're not worth arguing with further. You may go on knocking Dmitri Hvorostovsky and I will bow to your superior knowledge. Lol.

  • Yes, indeed you are ignorant, but don't worry , you are not alone. Most of the opera houses are today managed by ignorants, clueless people like you.

‎"Audiences judge by real worth and no by reputation. The artist must really please the public or suffer. The verdict of the audience is better than the examination of a hundred so-called experts" Enrico Caruso (then don't be surprised if you see more opera houses closing!!)

  • @promopera Lol! WHO is ignorant here? Have you heard of the global recession that is responsible for THOUSANDS of companies closing their doors and MILLIONS of people losing their jobs? THERE is the reason that smaller opera companies have also had to close their doors, NOT as you claimed earlier because they were employing Hvorostovsky to sing so badly! Catch a wake-up man! The timbre, the power, the dynamics and the nuance that he has in his voice make him a PERFECT Verdi baritone!

  • you are a complete ignorant!! New York City opera closed! San Antonio opera is closing while I write. Boston opera closed. Pacific Opera closed. Baltimore opera closed,,, and so on. And by the way, the last season La Scala canceled many of their productions, and most of the opera houses in Italy are doing less and less productions.

  • @promopera Yeah it's a tragedy that the Metropolitan, Chicago, San Francisco, Covent Garden, Berliner Staatsoper, Paris, La Fenice and La Scala are all closing down. I'll certainly miss them all.

  • yeah right,,,no wonder why opera houses in the US are closing..... oh please!

  • @promopera Yes I must be new in opera as I have retired as an operatic baritone with a 32 year career! No I do not enjoy Bocelli, but I will bow to your obvious superior knowledge and you obviously have been a performer as well on stage and so have garnered your knowledge first hand. Clearly the major Houses around the world have NO understanding of what a Verdian baritone is and I will get them to contact you so that they no longer employ the UN-Verdian Hvorostowsky. Lol.

  • Mr. Andredekock, I have heard him in a recital in Miami, and there are plenty of youtubes recordings, and clearly he is NOT a verdian baritone. May be you are new in the opera, or you are one of those bocelli fans, but if you would understand a little bit about voices, you would understand that a Verdian baritone is Leonard Warren, Renato Bruson, Bastianini, Cappuccilli, Titta Ruffo, G. Taddei, etc. but not Dmitri. He is ok for light roles.
