FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY involves the application of psychological knowledge, theory and skills to the understanding and functioning of the legal and criminal justice system. Forensic psychology encompasses psychology and the law, the psychology of police and policing, corrections, parole, victim services, addiction services and family services. It also covers activities related to law enforcement and the assessment and treatment of juvenile and adult offenders.
Forensic psychologists may prepare psychological reports for the court or parole bodies, appear as expert witnesses, provide consultation to police and correctional organisations, carry out research (eg into offending behaviour, witness studies, jury behaviour) and provide assessment and treatment in forensic settings.
A Forensic Psychologist testifies to Mens Rea-guilty condition of mind, neurosis, psychosis, affective disorders ,crimes of passion, hurt, sustained provocation, grave and sudden provocation on account of mitigating circumstances, psychological autopsies to suicide, criminal profiling and relevant conditions of precipitating psychological factors to crime on the basis of books /authentic web search. They are also concerned with social issues like religion, marital discord, good faith, discretion, promoting enmity, juvenile delinquency, inciting mob behavior and for all such psycholegal issues for which there is no medicine.Therapeutic jurisprudence and wellness education ,make them an authority to suggest changes for the legal system.(Social Objectives)
In the words of a Forensic Psychologist- I evaluate persons who are accused of crimes for current mental status, mental status at the time of a crime, and for extenuating, mitigating, and exculpating circumstances.
When a psychologist treats an individual who was emotionally traumatized by an accident, the treatment is clinical in nature, designed to assist the individual in recovering from the trauma. But, when the psychologist is asked to provide a report for the court, regarding the extent of the trauma, and to assess the psychological damage incurred, then the psychologist is providing forensic services. Forensic psychology refers broadly to the production and application of psychological knowledge to the civil and criminal justice systems. " (Cited in Harrower, 2001). Research leading to superior knowledge is the engine of value creation that makes a university valuable to society (academic, student, and business constituencies). Thus, generation of new knowledge through scientific research, and its dissemination to academic, industry, and public policy constituencies are major thrusts of leading universities. Herein lies the rationale for the social objective.
Crime Scene Investigation Report.-The forsenic psychologist submits his/her report about the accused, other persons testifying as witnesses and a general overview of the crime scene,as a member accompanying the crime squad reaching the scene of crime.Later on he/she may draw a profile of the accused.Crime scene investigation report usually is given by a team of officers especially assigned for the service ;who collect primary data at the crime scene, including witness examination .5-6 police stations are covered by a single team.Herein an open jeep would suit the purpose as it would distinguish it from the rest of the official cars of the police,as also being suitable for rugged terrain, some times in dense forests and remote villages where crime is just ignored. When villagers can avail of mobile services ,then why not police services?Only an open jeep would suit the purpose.(Photo-graph included.)modified by aneesh kalra to suit indian requirements.
ii)Welfare of Police Personnel(Stress Reduction,Quality of Life)-
The police and army, are the same- should have the same benefits, perks and comfort-exactly same payscales equivalent stature. The visionary value is that we can hope for an efficient Police .The local doctors should attend to all police personnel on priority basis,in case of injury, ill health-free of cost as well as the chemists ,will give medicines. The medical infrastructure are the main tax evaders-paying minimum tax.
