It's hard to imagine the producers of Friends wanting anyone but Matthew Perry as Chandler. He turned out to be one of the standouts of that cast, and I read about people who worked on the show claiming that Perry's personality was exactly like Chandler's.

Bierko's a decent comic actor (as in this ep), but is not "average" enough to play a lovable loser like Chandler. Perry can pull off the dateless, pop-culture spouting goof better than anyone.
