Before dawn on March 7, Muslims armed with machine guns and machetes attacked the villages of Dogo Nahawa, Rasat and Jeji, killing 500 Christians, mostly women and children. The attacks took place in spite of the imposed curfew and heavy security presence in Plateau state.
Most disturbingly, the massacre of the Christian villagers could have been prevented had the military listened to warnings and taken measures to stop the attackers. The governor of Plateau State, Jonah John Jang, had called and informed Major General Saleh Maina, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3rd Armored Division, about the impending attacks against the Christians. But the officer failed to protect the Christians when the Muslims attacked. Governor Jang is quoted by the Nigerian daily This Day as saying, It (the massacre) could have been avoided if they [the military] acted on my report.
