In my opinion there is no better version of "Outside" than this, the one from "Abort." Both the 1987 demo and the "Here at the Home" version have a much thinner sound with less distinguishable guitar and less consistent vocals. It's a matter of opinion. Maybe some folks think this version is too polished?
At the end of the line "my heart skips and I twist a little/the light's green and I drive away—" other versions have Janet singing "oh" but here it's almost a moan. There the song come alive.

@Sauron338 people who make generic comments about the "trashy" music that comes out post-2000 are 75% washed-up aging hipsters who are too stuck in their depressing, nostalgic worldview to even have enough of a soul to appreciate innovative art in the first place

@mrzvd Totally agree, had a tape of the "original" somewhere....have to find it now. :)

Perhaps he actually thinks this version of the song sucks, even in comparison.

Dude, the Abort version, while not that from Here at the Home in length and general quality, is still frogging awesome.
Have the decency to say "sucks compared to Here at the Home" as opposed to dropping it in the generic "sucks" bin inhabited by such trash as... I don't know, 75% of anything recorded post-2000.

This is the only version I have ever heard. Probably my favorite Tribe song. If there is a better version I'd love to hear it - someone post it... pleeeeeeze.
Oh, and an album version of Payphone would be great too. I no longer have the album :-(

This was such an underrated band. I love that "Rock Band" got people to hear this fantastic song.
