PAVILION is a monumental open air installation where banners circle around and between each other. It cannot offer a safe haven or shelter against outside threats. This work is not about making an object, it is about making a space, the surface is a means.
Lawrence Malstaf - renowned for his much talked-about interactive projects such as Shrink - has developed PAVILION especially for Festival a/d Werf. It is the first installation of the Flemish artist to manifest itself in a public space: during the festival it will adorn the frontlawn of the Stadsschouwburg Utrecht. Lawrence Malstaf creates mostly pieces or installations that react to their surroundings and will make the spectator a participant or an essential part of what's going on. In his work walls move, gravity is defied, and the performer is sucked into a vacuum. It may even suggest a tornado.
