Live December 31st 1998. I'd also like to note that I didn't film this.

Despite how bad the trombone player in question may have been, covering a song with better technical playing than the original artist is easy. You have a progression and structure to work from.

Creating new works people actually want to listen too is a different story.

Do you hear all the people talking in the background? It's almost funny. If they all the trendy kids would worship this man in only a few years, I think they would be paying better attention.

This is a good version of this song. Timing is not all that important to a lo-fi band like NMH and his voice is dead on as always. I haven't ever heard Mangum sing off key now that I think of it. Oh yeah and check out some of my music pleeease!

The trombone is almost awful (and i'm kinda...kind), but also Jeff wasn't at his best: the studio version is much better, and i heard another live where both trombone and Jeff sounds MUCH better than here...anyway, it was the last day of the year, who knows, maybe they were tight...lol

I think andy has a good point, I don't know why everyone is rushing to be so defensive. Great musicians can have weak performances. It isn't a huge deal, but i think that the trombone solo in this performance was definitely not up to par compared to the recording.

I don't know, I don't think Scott Spilane was ever a talented enough musician to reproduce those melodies live.

Also, I don't think that was the point. I like that NMH is willing to let their songs grow instead of writing them in stone. It adds to the whole spontaneous feel of the album, and assures us Aeroplane wasn't just well crafted, but something truly special and unique.
