Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff and SAP founder Hasso Plattner discuss Software-as-a-Service and the Future of Enterprise Software. Moderated by Quentin Hardy of Forbes.
Client Server software will just fade away as clients move from the old version to the new. The next major upgrade of any such software costs in the millions to undertake regression testing of customisations (due to large inflexible and static data models), installation, resizing, infrastructure refresh and then there's licences...A fraction of that cost will be the money spent to move to a cloud model.
Hasso is right about "the strongest company wins" (not the best).
Salesforce is the best in Software and Platform as a Service and its strength, whilst not yet in dollars (albeit a very fast growing company), its power lies in the business model that it follows to run its business..The community of customers, ISVs and other S/PaaS coming and mashing-up (integrating) together..that is far greater than 2000 developers. Its thousands of business owners, analysts, CxOs, Architects and developers.
Anyone who thinks the statements around the platform and its ability to maintain and not break customisations when the system is auto-upgraded should really lookup some force.com videos.
The architecture is fundamentally different from that of the traditional ERPs. I think Hasso understands this well but was doing a great job in being passively aggressive....
Onkel Plattner?

This is how Client Server ends.
Not by a bang, but a (long drawn out) whimper.
