04.05.1940 Rombaken fjord, near Narvik, Norway

Polish destroyer GROM and destroyer FAULKNOR were on patrol off Narvik bombarding German positions when GROM was struck at 08;28 on her torpedo tubes by a German bomb.
Destroyer GROM (Cdr A. Hulewicz ORP) was sunk in the explosion and her survivors were picked up by light cruiser ENTERPRISE, which lowered boats to rescue survivors at 08;35, destroyers FAULKNOR and BEDOUIN. Light cruiser AURORA picked up four survivors.
Polish Lt (JG) A. Krakowski and fifty seven ratings were killed. The survivors were transferred from destroyers FAULKNOR and BEDOUIN to Battleship RESOLUTION, then to Polish destroyer BURZA.
The Polish survivors were embarked on a hospital ship for the passage back to England. They departed Harstad on the 10th for the Clyde.

During her operations during the Norwegian Campaign Grom was ranked by the German soldiers as probably the most hated of all the allied ships deployed to the area. This hatred was founded by the fact that the Grom took an intense interest in all hostile movements on shore and was reputed to spend hours lurking the coast in order to kill even a single German. On 4 May 1940, Grom carried out what turned out to be the last of her many Naval Gunfire Support missions in the Narvik area in the Rombaken fjord. Her loaded midship torpedo launcher was struck by a bomb from a German plane and the torpedo exploded, causing the hull to break into two parts and the ship to sink almost immediately with a loss of life of 59 sailors.

  • Interesting rare footage! The Poles really put up a good fight alongside the Brits....5*!

  • @skyraider1404 - ...alongside the allies. In this particular campaign there fought also two other destroyers and subs, on the land 5 Polish infantry battalions.

    Thanks for appreciation.

Seredcznie go za to nienawidzimy...."

  • One of the 4 British ratings rescued from the Grom was my Grandfather Thomas Land (white coat)

Anyway when the allied managed to get into Narvik, the Germans destroyed completely the Iron Ore Harbour. This was done by 350 german explosive experts in disguise of red cross personell sent through swedish railway net. After the destruction much less then 11% of the production from the ore field could get exported via swedish harbours. The best day in post-Narvik conditions Sweden managed to export 11% of usual cargo via Narvik.

  • Excellent footage of a fine ship, thanks for uploading .

  • ha, właśnie na tym służył mój wujek i cudem przeżył utonięcie.

  • Shortly after noon on 8 April 1940 Polish submarine ORP Orzel (eng. Eagle) sank the 5,261 ton clandestine German troop transport Rio de Janeiro off the small harbour village of Lillesand in southern Norway, killing hundreds of German troops intended for the invasion of Norway.
