@Karateworm its the story of the gresford disaster of september 22 1934. if you search wikipedia for 'Gresford Disaster' then the full story should be there. before reading you should understand that the song was written using an amount of artistic licence so certain things in the song will be different from the real story.

@Karateworm from what i glean from the song, the colliery manager had been advised to not blast a new seam as there was a build up of natural gas, basically he was asked to 'hold fire' or 'hold your fire'
