  • shouldnt you have a charge controller on your battery?

  • @TheSolarSkater with 1 amp output i usually dont put a charge contoller for portable charges. i do on my other systems where i leave it out all day and i am usually putting out 3 to 6 amps charging power.

  • So since it seems you got quite a bit of experience with these panels and got all your amps and what-not straight I hope you can answer a few questions I got.

First of I'm wondering if you think or know if one of these things would charge one of them tiny laptops, not interested in using more then one panel and it taking a long time wouldn't matter.

Secondly I'm wondering what I would have to do to make this thing charge my Ipod touch, what kind of adapter/transformer thing I'd need

  • @88Kamikaze69 ipods normally take what a usb port can put out and that is 5 volts, so you need a power converter from 12 volt to 5 volts. since it comes with a 12 volt socket you can plug your converter right into it.

laptops norminally take 19 volts are higher and since this puts out 12 volts you would need an inverter 12 volt to 120 volt ac, but this does not put out the amps you would need to run it for long . this is only the 12 watt putting out 1 amp (12 watts / 12 volts = 1 amp)

  • Great video. Would that be able to charge a Razor cell phone around 750 Mah? Can it also charge a Zune around 800 Mah? I just bought a Brunton solarport 4.4 and it doesn't charge them at all.

  • @ArmyRanger10 this unit is the 12 watt . take watts and divide volts to get amps. (12 watts / 12 volts = 1 amp)

since your devices are below 1 amp and most phones and zune and ipods take 5 volts this will work fine. i charge my zune and ipod touch just as i would if i plugged them into a computer using the usb connection (5 volts dc)

  • the briefcase ( 1a ) is cheaper then this 1 ... but good info & all

  • @imbroglio1 yes I did. I had two of them die on me in Iraq. They arent made for daily use (folding/unfolding). I took them apart after the failures and because of the folding/unfolding it wore off the insulation on the wires and they shorted out when it got wet. On one of them the solar cell material got cloudy and de-laminated. Like I said, its not for extended use where you have to rely on it in an emergency. Its a crap product. Switched to another QUALITY maker, never a problem since.

  • @operator223 Did you actually test one of these units? The Alpinist site did a test of the unit in Alaska and it had no problems being exposed to rain and snow while strapped to the roof of a tent.

  • Solar powered light......??? What a great time were living in..... :) 3:10 ... reminds me of the jokes we used to say back when I was in elementary.......

  • Nice thanks

  • Hey Folks,

this is a nice idea but you better treat it like a baby. Take it on an extended camping trip and if you get it wet and it turns to crap. Do not use this product in a foggy or damp area. Do not rely on it for emergencies... it's a cheap crap product. There are better ones out there, but of course, they are much more in cost. If you need something to rely on for emergencies, get a regular glass panel from a quality name brand if you can.

  • Sorry to bother you again.

Am I able to use the hook up the battery clamps to the battery, attach the extension cable, and the car outlet together to plug in the devices?

  • BTW how would you hook up those devices to the battery? Because if I can't keep a fan running, I would like to know how to connect some devices to that battery is case of emergencies.

  • That fan you have there is the O2 cool fan, right?

I have the Sunlinq 6.5W solar panel.

My question is, it says that the output this one produces is also 12V, will it work with that fan? Because I was thinking about buying a fan like that, but I don't want to waste my money if it won't work at all.

  • @trkwoodybear1969

So would you know if the Ipads have enough free apps now to actually be useufull as a tablet pc?

I know there are a few tablet pc's out there already but those things are just to lumpy abd unpractical.
