One reason for Somaliland's optimism was the relative prosperity it enjoyed in the decade prior independence. During the 1950s, the Arabian oil boom generated an unprecedented demand for Somali livestock. The central towns of Hargeysa, Berbera, and Burco became the hubs of that trade, forming a triangle that would eventually become the core of economic development in the region. During the same period, in the Hawd region, the colonial authorities (in the person of engineer Jack Laurence5) built a chain of earth dams along the Ethiopian border to collect run-off water. These man-made depressions prolonged the period nomads could graze their livestock in the Hawd, and thus changed the face of the land forever. Permanent settlements began to appear, raising surplus livestock for export to Arabia through the markets of Somaliland's central economic hub. In the years following independence, this zone became increasingly specialized in the commercial production of livestock and related export services. The relative economic dominance of this central triangle, and its relationship with the Arabian livestock markets, has changed very little up to the present day. Since 1963, China has provided Somalia with various kinds of economic assistance. The main projects China has accomplished in Somalia are: National Theatre, the Hargeisa water supply project, Somalia Cigarette Manufactory, Somalia Banadir Hospital, Somalia Stadium, road between Beled Weyne and Burao, Barrouen Farm, Fanole Farm and a hydro-power station, etc.

China started to contract projects and labor cooperation in Somalia since 1982. From the year 1963 to 1980, trade between the two countries was conducted by means of keeping accounts and later changed to cash transaction. China's exports to Somalia are main light industrial products, textile, medicine, hardware and small-sized machinery, and main imports from Somali are myrrh, frankincense and leather, etc. The economic and trade agreements signed by the governments of China and Somalia were: the Agreement between the Government of the People's Republic of China and the Government of the Republic of Somalia on Economic and Technological Cooperation 1963.

  • i hope somalia will be reunited soon inshaalaah

  • @waranish

that is not entirely somalia's fault. there are traitors in somalia no doubt, the warlords, but the main culprit is those who want to subjugate somalia in geopolitical interests. somalis have never bowed down, so thats why you see war in southern somalia for the past 20 years. this resistance to slavery is something to be proud of, no?

  • i like the songs you use. are they somalian?

  • remember this my somalies this was when were one!! insha allah we will get there for peace

  • I Want to know how Somalia use to be in the first times and what women and men wore at the time along with the children

  • One day somalia will be a great country who come together as one nation. I hope warlords will see where their real future lies and killing their brothers and sisters is not advantage for them. simply let's see how the world going forward and how we are waiting our enemy to come to us and solve our problems. Somalia, we are Muslims which means we should lead the world and get solutions for any difficult that we face. God bless Somalia! Amen.
