I threw this poem together in the last 3 hours before I headed off to visit NYC. I read it to my friends on the rooftop bar of the Delancy in the Lower East Side, July 23, 2009.
My story begins in the clouds of Seattle
Temp job to temp job, skedeet and skedattle
Til one day I racked up enough to move East
To the city of dreams, bagels, pizza, MAD yeast
It started in Harlem by 125th
Popeyes Chicken, cajun rice and 3 chicken strips
Employed at a print shop, the whole staff Jamaican
Thinking who dis white boy? he must be mistaken
Not quite what I imagined when I was back home
Dirty South and Reggaeton wherever Id roam
But Woody Allen said this, to which I say yup
85% of success is showing up
I knew what I wanted, to study animation
This when I knew not the amount of pagination
To SVA I said, "Hark! Ive come from afar!"
And with the acceptance letter, I lit my cigar
First day as a freshman, already 22
The old classroom tension, from faces anew
I needed to find one like me in a stir up
Vic Goldfeld, whos getup said Hi, Im from Europe
Gina Kirlew giggled like nobodys business
Paul Clarks animation was something to witness
Art Sir had a drive I saw like no other
And Mike Impollonia, we talked like brothers
Alden whose style hed change for no man
Kerri and Jenn always had the party plan
Dan Beck made cartoons while his dad made candy
And for a night on the town, Mauricio came in handy
Ian Jones Quartey, dear friend and pop phenom
Foley full of follies from an Island thats Long
And when out in Queens, I saw him play bass
Rani and Veronica I met with smiling face
Arlington Beethoven Cruz, OMG
Zero, the first ever goth Phillipine
Susan proves age aint nothing but a number
And Benny was often hunched over in a slumber
But Jersey awaited, along with a band
I entered Life Drawing, Tarun extended his hand
My band back at home, we need a lead singer
Now sweet Jersey memories are wrapped round my finger
Upon graduation, the working world loomed
My student loans festering, anxiousness bloomed
But two men, experienced answered my cries
Todd Broder and Renato saw promise in my eyes
Tony and John, it's been quite a ride
To rock Millsberry with work in which we took pride
And then Nickelodeon, does it get any better?
Lunch trips to Shake Shack, no matter the weather
And who showed me crazy parties, I must raise a beer
To Jason and Sandra, you know I hold you dear
Patricia, Dan, Alisha our parties brought a mob
Just like Tim and Eric, to us I say Great Job!
To friends I missed, sorry I must confess
This poem was last minute, my mind is a mess
But God bless New York, where I can proudly say
I went for my dream, and I did it my way
Nice Teddy. Ans to top it off, there's me being a jackass at the end =)
