I'm Doug's sister. I obviously grew up in the same household as he. I am Christian but not Catholic the way we were raised. I believe in gay rights. I believe in pro-choice although I myself am pro-life personally. It was very hard for me to accept his theological choice but if you love someone it ultimately doesn't matter. Life is a journey...get walking :). Good video Doug.

The analogy between religion and the Emperor's New Clothes is perfect, and I'm sure Stefbot isn't the first who thought of it, as I was thinking about it myself for the past few days.
However, I'm still baffled that despite the fact that there are so many of us who scream from the bottom of our lungs how completely naked the emperor is, and despite being heard by so many about the emperor's nakedness, most people who hear it still want to pretend otherwise.

While Christians indeed make a majority in America, having about 15% of non-believers and another 10% adherents of other religions hardly makes "almost everyone" a Christian there. And while there are more Christians fundamentalists in America than in any other country, not all American Christians are crazy fundamentalists.
Just some technicalities...

@Akatam0t0ma You are correct in that neither analogy fits very well. The best analogy is that of brainwashing, because there are many people who are mentally sound otherwise who will profess their faith in Jesus as their lord and savior. The youtube user Stefbot once compared religion to The Emperor's New Clothes, where everyone knows that what they're being told is bullshit but are too afraid to speak out about it.

I'm in Scouse's position in that I've never had any problems of that sort, but from what I heard that sure sounded like awesome advice.

@Palmergedd0n All too true. Christians here tend to stick to their own groups when talking about the "truth" of their religion because they know we will not be silent on the issue here. In the USA, where almost everyone is a Christian, the vocal fundamentalists can be louder because they have lots of company.
Very good video response! I think you gave really sound advice, it's hard for me to understand how dificult it must be to renounce religion.

@ScouseCaspaXS It's just as hard for me to describe. It's a rejection of something you've been taught is fundamentally true ever since you can remember, something which your parents, whom you think are reasonable and rational people, believe wholeheartedly themselves. Because of your age and subordinate status to them, an announcement of atheism will first be dismissed as youthful folly, and then denounced angrily as stupidity or insanity. I could write an essay on it, lol.

"Prepare for the worst and hope for the best"
Brilliant advice.
As someone who was never a religious person, I often find myself wondering how hard can it really be to renounce a religion, in the sense of realizing that it's all a big steaming pile of bullfeces. Is it really THAT hard?
BTW, I didn't recognize it was you when I saw the vid in my subscription box, LOL! You look nothing like in your other videos! Where did you glasses&beard go? xD

@Akatam0t0ma See below for your first question. As for your second, I shaved for my (two) jobs and just took the glasses off, because they make a nasty reflection when recording a video that obscures my eyes.
