Featuring Kotaro Kohama & Shinzato Jin'an Sensei (1901-1945) and was taken in the yard of the Okinawan Prefecture Teachers College. The man using the chishi is reported to be Sogen Sakiyama Roshi; now of the Okinawan Int'l Zen Center.
- The famous Itoman Karate expert Machiya Buntoku (Kinjo Matsu) was filmed. Also on the film is a demonstration of the Naha-Te kururunfa and Tensho kata. The performers include Kyoda Juhatsu (age 30), Shinzato Jinan (age 17) and 5-6 others. A group demonstration of about 50 people including Gusukuma Koki or Tahara Taizo or Nakamoto Seibun, performs Seiunchin kata. This is probably the oldest karate film in Okinawa.
For more info http://web.mclink.it/MC6954/_private/... file that gives a history of this clip.
Some writers about this video believe that Miyagi Sensei himself is training with the 'tan', if so then it is the only video of Miyagi Sensei ever taken.
****Special thank you to Patrick McCarthy Sensei for the video clip****

Emile, the Satsuma clan invaded in the 1620's almost 400 years ago. Just because they took their weapons it was not the total reason for unarmed self defense. For many years Okinawa was a trade partner with China. Besides trading they exchanged martial skills for years prior. You should research "The Pechin (親雲上)" the Okinawa Samurai and their involvement in Karate. Unarmed combat has been around since the first humans fought.

its not 4000 years old, japan had not invaded okinawa 4000 years ago and confiscated all their weapons. therefore there was no need to learn unarmed combat

Thank you for this rare material.which features the young students of goju ryus founder chojun miyagi. And his favured student shinzato, whose death in Ww2,prompted miyagi to teach goju to a wider public.prior to this shinzato was to be his successor.out of this misfortune goju is now world wide, preserving the true traditions of Okinawan Te.Hojo undo, and junbi undo is regularly trained here in England at our dojo.oss.
