FLU or COLD - - A Chinese herbal prescription.
A flu or cold usually goes away in a few days if you rest enough and drink a lot of water. However, the herbal prescription will help you recover faster, especially if you have a stubborn cough. It also reduces all the discomforts of the flu while you are recovering.

For elders, kids, or those who are weak, don't wait for the flu to go away by itself. Take the herbs to end the flu sooner and prevent it from degenerating into something serious like bronchitis or pneumonia.

The prescription should be written according to what kind of symptoms the patient has, and the severity of those symptoms:
1) Fever or high temperature
Lian Qiao 連 翹
Huang Qin 黃 芩
Zhi Zi 枝 子
Di Gu Pi 地 骨 皮
2) Cough, phlegm and nasal congestion
Chuan Bei Mu 川 貝 母
Sang Bai Pi 桑 白 皮
Qing Pi 青 皮
Zi Su Ye 紫 蘇 葉
Pi Pa Ye 批 杷 葉
3) Indigestion requiring mild purging
Zhi Shi 枳 實
Fan Xie Ye 番 瀉 葉
4) Weak respiratory system (depending on the patient)
Bai Bu 百 步
Zi Wan 紫 菀
A combination of 13 herbs are recommended.

There are other symptoms requiring no treatment, because they will go away automatically when the flu is reduced, e.g. tiredness, aches and pains, or lack of appetite. These symptoms are your body's natural reaction to the flu. It would be a mistake if herbs are prescribed to lessen those symptoms. Why? Those symptoms all require strengthening herbs which are "hot" in nature. The herbs you use for the flu have to be "cold" in nature. Thus you would create a conflict in your prescription. This conflict would result in lessening the overall effect of the herb package, and even worse, prolonging the flu. If those symptoms still remain after the flu is gone, something else is wrong and should be treated from a different angle by strengthening the body.

Drink one to two cups (8 oz each) of herb tea a day.
Chinese herbs are very effective in reducing the various discomforts of the flu and shortening its hold on you.
Most flu patients need less than five days of herbs to completely recover.
While you recover from the flu, remember to rest, drink more water, eat light meals, and avoid greasy, peppery, deep-fried and barbecued food.

This is just one formula with countless variations depending on:
* Severity and nature of the symptoms based on observation and discussion of the problem with the herbalist.
* How weak is your body and how much herbs you need to help you fight the flu.

I have never used Rhino horn in my prescriptions because I don't believe in it. You should understand that each Chinese herbalist has his own style and belief. There are over 1000 herbs in the Chinese dictionary for me to choose. I have plenty of choices for the ones I like. There are millions of Chinese herbalists. Not everyone believes in using Rhino horn.

  • Excuse me John, (I know this is a bit late to ask for help since this is such and old video) I have a really bad cold and I have been getting bronchitis nearly every year and I'm trying to catch this kinda early. What can I do to prevent my cold to turning into bronchitis??

  • @FloppyEmperor

A cold should not last for more than 10 days. Curing a cold is easy: rest, water, eat light, reduce fever if any, reduce cough if any. Either Chinese or Western medicine will do. If the cold persists, it may turn into bronchitis.

  • JohnFung, which books would you recommend for a student to learn about all the herbs used in TCM?

  • @studynerd

Learn from a dictionary or handbook with an objective description of all Chinese herbs (around 1000). Don't pick up any herb book talking about only those herbs that the author knows. Chances are you will be brainwashed by the author.

  • Do not buy into anything this person is saying. The Chinese have no regard whatsoever for conservation. Just ask Mr. Fung why China has done nothing to address the issue of Rhino Poaching. China and its so called traditional doctors are responsible for the destruction of rhinos by stupidly thinking that Rhino horns can cure diseases.

If you buy into this nonsense, then you buy into an ideology that cares nothing about animals that are being killed by the dozens in Africa. Believe it!!

  • But how do we take in the herbs?

  • I don't have the herbal tincture you're looking for. Neither do I know there is one that you can inhale.

  • it tastes like warm coke with no sugar , you can however add a bit of sugar with it :)
