Alzheimer's disease effects 5.4 million Americans and that number is expected to reach 16 million by 2030. Alzheimer's is the sixth-leading cause of death in the country and the only cause of death among the top 10 in the United States that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed.
While the federal government will spend about $6 billion on cancer research and about $4 billion on cardiovascular disease research this coming year, it will invest a mere fraction of that on Alzheimer research — less than $500 million.
People with Alzheimer's and their families speak out to raise awareness of the disease and the need for a reason to hope.
