Boeing 777 viewed from another B777 at cruising level over the Atlantic.

Flying close to the East coast of the United States, we could see this Air France Boeing 777 that was flying close to us only a few miles away and below our altitude. I was on flight AA57 from London Heathrow to Miami also on a Boeing 777.

No. The minimum separation in height is normally 1000 feet (roughly 330 metres) until 29000 feet of altitude and also above if the Air Traffic Control Service is "organized" for that (if not, the separation will be 2000 feet) and the aeroplane is properly equipped (if not, it must stay below 29000 feet).
Of course a 50-metres-long plane looks huge when it's only 300 metres away and seeing it flying roughly at your speed is definitely impressive.
