Pack theory (the concept of a hierarchy with alpha on top, etc.) is very appealing to humans, especially to men, but it's just not appropriate way of modeling behavior in our domestic dogs. The theory has many different versions, all based on one or two studies of wolf behavior. There have been *many* others, including studies of village dogs, that show there is no pack structure.
