Charles Nutter talks about the evolution of JRuby and the Java Virtual Machine. In this 5.1-part series he gives a background on how he and Tom Enebo (the other member of 'the JRuby Guys' duo) worked with others like Ola Bini (who is seen in this part the lecture). Charlie demonstrates calling Java Swing libraries from JRuby code, discusses RubyGems with JRuby, shows Rails running on JRuby, and explains how much work it took to get it running by JavaOne in 2007, and how he and Tom were then hired by Sun. Charlie also talkes about how someone implemented ported the regular expression engine in a month allowing the execution of regular expressions over a byte array
