The Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum is owned by the Rochester Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. The Chapter holds a monthly membership meeting. On the 3rd Thursday of June, July & August of each year, the meeting is held at the R&GVRRM, featuring operations of the museum's railroad collection. Visitors and guests are always welcome for any of the Rochester Chapter NRHS's meetings.

For the July meeting, the featured equipment was Lehigh Valley Railroad ALCO RS-3m #211 pulling two of the museum's cabooses, Erie C254 and Penn Central 18526. This now one of a kind "Hammerhead" ALCO RS-3m performed several photo run-bys for the meeting participants, some of which are shown here. Originally built for the Pennsylvania Railroad, #211 was once equipped with both a steam generator and dynamic brakes necessitating the unusual high short hood, i.e. "Hammerhead". Enjoy this rare locomotive in action, and please consider a donation to the R&GVRRM. The museum is currently raising the $4500.00 to purchase new starting batteries for #211.

  • I read in one of Mike Bednar's excellent articles that this was an EMD repower. Sounds odd looking at an RS3 and hearing the EMD chant. I think I remember the article saying it was a 12-567, but I dont remember if it was a B or a C model engine.

  • #211 is repowered with a 12-567B.

  • Nice engine... awful horn!

  • Actually it is a really nice horn when all of the horn's bells are working. Alas something got in the horn leaving us only one of the bells sounding making for a not so perfect sound. It will be repaired this winter.
