Yeah that's definitely possible, it took us forever to get that piston out of there. I also agree about the project, you're able to enjoy the bike a lot more after you've held every part of it in your hand.
That almost looks like a victim of straight gas with little to no oil additive with the missing chunk out of the bottom of the head and absolutely no rings. With the tank rust and motor rebuild as well as electrical and wheel bearing repair that's pretty much a complete bike rebuild. Good project for someone just getting into peds, he'll learn how to rebuild one from the ground up right from the get-go.
