The traditional jazz tune "Baltimore" (does anyone know the origin of the tune?) is played here by an impromptu ensemble:

Craig Ventresco on guitar. He has played with the Bo Grumpus Trio, has his own solo CD, and also plays with Meredith Axelrod (YouTube's "meredithanthraxelrod").

Brad Kay on cornet. Brad is one of Janet Klein's parlor boys and does solo piano work too.

Julia Riley on flute. Julia plays with the Raspberry Jam Band (which doesn't have a web site or any albums yet).

Andrew Barrett (YouTube's "KawhackitaRag") on washboard.

Shortly afterward, the jam session grew with the addition of a violin, a tuba, and a second washboard, all sitting and standing around in the Red Lion hotel lobby in Sacramento.

  • Nice playing and tasteful non irritating washboard, LOVE it.

  • @LittleBrotherBlues Andrew Barrett is really terrific on the washboard. Search his name with the word "washboard" and you'll find some really great stuff on YouTube -- in particular some from a sit-in he did with pianists Brian Holland and Jeff Barnhart. (Andrew's a darn good piano player too!)

  • I love it.

  • this is sooooo fucking cool.

  • These are all the 1927 recordings (and earliest) I have besides the Frankie Trumbauer date.

Clarence Williams & his Blue Five Orchestra: April 27, 1927

The Red Heads (Red Nichols): Sept. 16 1927

    Jack Crawford: Sept. 27,1927

  • "Baltimore" was recorded for Okeh on September 30, 1927 by Frankie Trumbauer and his Orchestra (Beiderbecke, Lang, Venuti, et al.)

Don't know who may have recorded it earlier.

Classics Records CD #1188 (Trumbauer) credits "McHugh-Healy-Kahal" while Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys' "Oh!" shows "McHugh, 1927."
