If you've recently upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) and your computer has a HDA Intel audio chip set, then you may be experiencing a popping sound coming out of your speakers. This video demonstrates a way to quickly fix this annoying problem.

Alternatively: Open a terminal and type:
gksu gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Then just comment out that last line (#options snd-hda-intel power_save=10) and save

  • it all went well until the very end....it didnt let me save...said my copy was just read only? or might be read only? :(

  • @xxch0c0b3anxx Try the alternative approach in the description

  • @shmalignant i just did...just says try to save nevertheless, and tells me it cant because it maybe read only or not enough disk space...which i know i have enough diskspace. i dont even have audio, help?

  • @xxch0c0b3anxx After you tried this you lost your sound, or you didn't have audio to begin with? If you had audio and this tutorial messed it up, then just go back and change everything the way it was (see 1:30 of vid). Otherwise, if you never had audio you may want to check out Ubuntu forums to troubleshoot your problem. :0)

  • is that a mac?

  • @MrCaPprankcalls This is a linux based operating system known as Ubuntu

  • How to do on windows laptop? c:

  • hey thanks man, this fix did the trick on my eeepc 900. i just installed Lubuntu 11.04 and i got audio popping after installing skype. the last line wasnt on the document, but i added it with the # and it worked! but then it came back after i started skype again, but went away when i shut it down. so whatever its all good

  • @capricious71 i do

  • I do like Ubuntu a lot. 10.10 was just right for me. Then with 11 they bring out this rubbish Unity interface and plenty of bugs. Apart from the popping sound, it also logs out randomly.

Does anyone like the Unity interface?

  • @capricious71 Same here...

I hate this update. I'd switch to Arch but I'm too lazy.

  • @capricious71

I'm in the same situation. (Meaning how the line isn't in 11.04 :[ )

  • Thanks for the video. Unfortunately, that line is not in 11.04's version of the file.

10.10 was working great then I upgraded and it started doing that. Don't suppose you know the solution in 11.04 do you? :)

  • @shmalignant i didnt have sound to begin with...and i will try checking the forums..im new to linux...so you can imagine how long it took me to figure how to download adobe flashplayer for this. i barely figured out im using karmic koala lol i will check troubleshoot though. thank you
