As long as Americans persist in producing far more horses than can be housed, there will be horses shipped for slaughter. At least the ones shipped to Canada are humanely dispatched by strictly enforced pain-free slaughter laws. Canadians don't eat horse meat, so the majority end up on European dinner plates, and used in the pet food industry.

I am a Canadian and we do NOT humanly kill horses. There was a spy camera at the slaughter house in Montreal Canada and one horse got shot 11 times before it finally was killed. The poor thing kept falling and getting up and the guy kept bashing with his "humane gun". I want to stop this, I live in Alberta and that's where they get most of the horse meat. Dear God, what have we become in this country, worse than animals.

Horses are NOT used in the pet-food industry. They have too many chemicals in them now.

It's called being a responsible horse owner.Call the Vet and have it euthanized.Its better than being hauled long distances no food no water and suffering horrific injuries by crammed into an trailer and hauled hundreds miles with no rest and then be stabbed in the neck repeatedly while still alive in an attempt sever the spinal cord.

@wombatstew1 I'm Canadian. I see a meat buyer who goes to all the horse auctions, I just don't know who he is. When I find out, he's going to get the death threat of his life. Today, I saved a mare who was due to be sent off in the next few days. I have never felt so happy in my life knowing that I saved her life. It is hard to see how many people continue to breed horses thinking it's completely fine.

@greatbigbubby I mean, there are more cows suffering in concentrated feeding operations, more pigs suffering, more chickens suffering. And you care about horses more than these animals due to some romantic notion that they are what? More noble? More beautiful? It just seems inconsistent to me, the same misguided humanism projected onto a horse.
