Activist and author Vito Russo interviews Harry Hay, a founder of the Mattachine Society and the Radical Faeries; and Barbara Gittings, a founder of the Daughters of Bilitis, editor of The Ladder, and organizer of Annual Reminder pickets at Independence Hall in Philadelphia. The show is "Our Time", ca. 1983.
So many millions of Americans are indebted to these two pioneers and those with whom they worked to make the modern gay rights movement possible. Their work has benefitted society beyond gays and lesbians in creating a more just and inclusive America.

People are not black and white. Hay was absolutely wrong in his support of NAMBLA. But that doesn't make the things he was right about wrong. Seperate the wheat form the chaff. Acknowledge the good he did; point out the bad. Only in this way will we find the true measure of the man.
