Yesterday, Jason Calacanis stirred up a bit of controversy with an anti iPhone post and some subsequent comments in the same vein at a conference yesterday. Calacanis' case against Apple centers around the company's jealousy over its perfect hardware and this paradox's concommitant cognitive dissonance. iPhone addicts are caught in a love-hate relationship with their phone, in which it does everything that it does so perfectly and beautifully, that they're driven crazy by the fact that it doesn't do everything and even sets up hurdles in the way of users growing its potential with experimental apps and migration to different mobile networks. Calacanis says to John Mulligan of SEO-PR at SES San Jose 2009: The iPhone is the greatest consumer device ever made. I think we can all agree on that. It is the Holy Grail of computing right now. It's got a beautiful form factor, it's fast now that they've got the new processor in it, and it's just wonderful to use with the multi-touch and whatnot -- however, I think that it is locked down like a cell phone or a mobile phone, but it's acting like a computer. That's creating some dissonance for me, and, I know, some other users.
Its true, why should we feel that we're doing something wrong by using our paid devices the way we want it.
