Great video. Nice that you took the time to educate your son as well. The snake is a speckled rattlesnake for sure. South Mountain is home to both species (Tiger and Speckled) but this is a Southwestern Speckled Rattlesnake C.mitchelli pyrrhus.
I live very close to South Mountain and remove them from people yards every year.

I wish I could see them in my area but then again I don't . Lol! Living were you live you have to be aware! Going to take the trash out in your backyard could be an adventure if you look around... Most snakes get outa the way but a few are caught by suprise and freeze up and stay there. Watch for those rookies and you'll be fine. Where boots and jeans to help in snake season. You did see a very rare one. "Speckled" Great vid! Observe them at a distance. Always show respect. Thank You! A+++

very cool vid man. beautiful snake and its good to see he/she the chance it deserved to survive in the wild. also good to see an adult showing a child how to do the right thing and help out when they can.

that is no doubt a speckled rattlesnake. They're beautiful!!! That's a panamint speckled rattlesnake (Crotalus mitchelli stephensi). Gorgeous! Good work!
I'm pretty sure that is C. mitchelli. But whether it's a tiger or speckled is not the point at all. The point is that I commend you for your video and showing the beauty and responsibility we have to ensure the survival of these incredible creatures. Thanks for that.

Okay okay...I'll admit that I just flipped through some snake/reptile books covering AZ and Maricopa county as well as a few web sites. My best guess then was "tiger." I've since been informed by enough folks and reviewed my orig sources to agree that it's most likely a speckled rattlesnake instead. But heck, I don't have the time to go and edit the video nor the title, so we'll just have to live with it!
