Video of Dogs at Airport (Part 1)

With the help of a private plane owner, more than a dozen small dogs that would have been euthanized in California now have a second chance at life in Oregon.
The Safe Haven Humane Society of Albany took in a plane full of dogs at the Eugene Airport on Friday, July 15th, 2011. All of the dogs on-board come from overcrowded animal shelters in Los Angeles County and city.

The problem has become so dire at some L.A. area shelters some shelters in the area are putting down between 30 and 70 dogs a day.

Rescued on Friday, most of the dogs now under the care of the Safe Haven Humane Society are small, young and of various breeds like Chihuahuas, terrier-mixes, border collies, a miniature poodle, shih-tzu and others including some puppies.

All of the dogs rescued were set to be put down, but a non-profit called "the Dog Rescuers" contacted Safe Haven to adopt the dogs.

"It's just really sad the situation, Los Angeles is dire, and if you ever gone to a shelter and just look into the eyes of any of these dogs, and just know that their fate isn't very good, so, anything we can do to help," says Candace Modrell, a volunteer with the Dog Rescuers.

By 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 16th, 2011, most, if not all of the dogs should be available for adoption at Safe Haven Humane Society off Interstate 5 exit 228. The shelter says with these dogs, it is now over capacity and needs all of the help it can get with either adoption or foster care.
