Southland's waters, both on the coast and inland, are administered by the regional harbourmaster, based at Invercargill. Environment Southland Navigation Safety bylaws apply in all areas
Southland region stretches from Tautuku in the east, to north of Milford Sound on the west coast. The area includes all the sounds in fiordland.... and Foveaux Strait, and takes in the whole of Stewart Island with its sheltered harbours along its eastern coastline
The two principal lakes in Southland are Manapouri and Te Anau. ......there are designated ski lanes at dock Bay...Brod Bay and Bluegum Bay as well as ski areas at Manapouri . On the water boats keep to the right, or starboard side. The same applies when using ski lanes...stay to the right and use the ski lane in an anticlockwise direction show skiers
Contact Environment Southland before you go on the water....avoid making a mistake that puts others at risk. www.es.govt.nz. The website also has maps of the rivers and where there are no speed restrictions so jetboats can operate.
Enjoy your boating in the south of New Zealand...stay safe and always be wary of the cold water in one of New Zealand's most spectacular and isolated regions.
