In this BBC Hardtalk interview, weapons inspector Hans Blix, characterised in the run-up to the Iraq war as incompetent by Blair's government, tells us that in his expert opinion, and contrary to Tony Blair's highly inexpert one given to the ongoing Chilcot enquiry, that Iraq without the 2003 war would still be completely incapable of any WMD programs, let alone entering into an arms race with Iran and Israel. I think he's right about that, but possibly not about Israel, whose security concerns about Iran, a country currrently ruled by someone who has promised to "wipe it off the face of the earth" are very real.

But Blix is right about Iran in the sense that the West must try every diplomatic method of dissuading them to built a Bomb, but, and this is his implication, forcing Iran to end its nuclear programme with an Iraq-style attack would be a very bad idea, not least because a nuclear-armed Iran, while clearly a very uncomfortable prospect, is nonetheless not inconceivable. For one thing, with the ownership of nuclear weapons comes a paradigm shift in status and responsibility. They bestow status, but that is a chimera because they can never be used as a first strike weapon, unless (to paraphrase Bill Clinton in 1994) you want your own country literally to cease to exist.

While I'm sure some will disagree, rest assured that not even this Iranian leadership is that insane, believe me. So, basically, Blx is right - in which case, Tony Blair's whole philosophy, and credibility, are thrown into question by this respected scientist's remarks.

  • zionist reporter. Good Blix!

  • @antekification

Anyone who likes George Galloway is a far bigger threat to humanity than weapons of mass destruction ever were or will be - in anybody's hands.

    He's that crazy ;)

  • Hans Blix is a wise and well respected man. If we live in a society where integrity and age and prudence is not respected, and we look to yammer at our council rather than look to take it, then the disadvantage is ours. Hans, you should be commended for your life so far and what you have given in level headed guidance to achieve civility.

  • You what? "Emancipate itself from UN rules"?

Emancipation refers to "becoming a citizen", a world citizen wrt the UN. The use of the word here is misspeaking. Being a citizen shouldn't refer to anarchy and doing what you like beyond accountability.

The IG Farben Corporation deified itself as a unaccountable monopoly, no questioning, in a bet-the-company vision that became bet-the-nation too. Many nations. They used job reservation by caste-rating virtues, as did Libya. The "excellent" got jobs.

  • If anyone believes this guy you are willingly blind. Nice thoughts about our sworn enemies, (who PAY HANDSOMELY to portray the US as 'agressors)....the enemies are not fooled...they think you are avloiding the reality of their intentions.....Weakness is an inability to look at reality.

  • Sorry Blix. If Iran said 'We will bomb the UN as soon as we get a bomb, or Sweden, would you sing a different tune? If you were responsible for Sweden's security, what would you do.......scold those who wanted to protect your country?.. What were you doiung for 6 months in Iraq....Did you give our enemies time to hide as many weapons as possible?....Hussein moved his wmd that he previously used against the Kurds, (remember, genius?) Against the Kurds. Go ahead and pretend he had no wmd.

  • YOU TELL HIM BLIX !!

  • Wise man

  • Western countries do not want a developed Iran and want to suck of its resources...simple is that.
