Thong Nguyen's father was a ranking member of the South Vietnamese military and in 1975, with Saigon about to fall to the North Vietnamese army, flight was the only option. The family reached New York, and for a year, Nguyen, his parents and five siblings lived in a small apartment on the Upper West Side. Nguyen later won a scholarship to Columbia, earning a mechanical engineering degree, then an MBA.

Today he is the San Francisco-based West Division Executive of U.S. Trust, Bank of America Private Wealth Management. He also serves as a member of the Bank of America's Diversity and Inclusion Council, and is on the boards of the San Francisco Ballet and the New York-based Partnership with Children. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) honored Nguyen in November 2010 as one of 10 Refugees of Distinction. Here, he tells the story of his refugee journey. Learn more at Rescue.org.
