On the last day of 2010, I was onboard Amtrak 6 as UP 5432 lead our train over snow covered Donner Pass. A nice treat was meeting the UP 1983, as well as the white fluffy stuff outside!

  • Nice one man 5*****

  • @BNSF7776 Thank ya kindly.

  • it looks like you were lucky enough to slip through between storms with no delays!

  • @Danapeople I'm always have a little luck on my side =P Thanks

  • Awesome video. That's scenery I can stare at all day. I'm a bit curious to know what happened that caused that UP leader to be put on. Usually when a locomotive breaks down they leave all the dead power on it so it can be repaired at the terminal station, but it doesn't look like that was the case here as there was only one P42 on it. I know this isn't the only locomotive they had on it originally because there's no way they would cross this pass with a single locomotive.

  • @murjax I asked the conductor about the UP leader and he mentioned that when they got the manifest for the train that day the 5432 was already listed on the train out of Emeryville, which came to the Zephyr's aid due to a power shortage (no P42's). The same set I'm sure was brought in the day before with 2 P42's, but for some reason or another one of them had to be removed.

  • Cool video, when I did a video of my trip over the pass on #6 it was snowing pretty heavy and the windows had a lot of ice and water on them.

  • @CaliforniaRailfan101 Thanks, the baggage car was a nice surprise to have on the train when it rolled by in Sacramento. The UP leader was added in Emeryville due to a power shortage. UP 5432 is a C45ACCTE

  • Nice! That sure is a lot of snow! It's cool that there was a Phase III baggage car AND a UP leader on your train! Nice meet with UP 1983 also! What kind of locomotive was the UP leader?

Interesting to see what Truckee looks like covered in snow!
