Samuel Osborne Barber II (1910 1981) was an American composer of orchestral, opera, choral, and piano music. His Adagio for Strings is among his most popular compositions and widely considered a masterpiece of modern classical music.

The paintings are from Francisco de Goya (1746-1828), a spanish painter and printmaker. Goya was a court painter to the Spanish Crown and a chronicler of history. He has been regarded both as the last of the Old Masters and as the first of the moderns. The subversive and subjective element in his art, as well as his bold handling of paint, provided a model for the work of later generations of artists, notably Manet and Picasso.

  • I know its not really to do with the music - which I love - but Goyas painting ''The Colussus'' has always frightened me ever since I was a little girl. Why did you chose Goya to go with this music btw?

  • @MrsJosephMerrick Well, I think goya's painting are a little bit frightening, yes, but I think that at the same time they make a strong impression when you look at them, and I consider his paintings very expressive. Barber's Adagio is also very expressive and sometimes is frightful listening to it. I thought that maybe joining two artists from different artistic eras would be more interesting than joining a german expressionist painter to this work of art.

  • @feneco2 ...his famous prints, but its just as a picture its very alarming and disturbing. I love Goya by the way, and I dont find them frightening at all.If only there were artists around now who could show such true expression. And I def wouldnt have chosen German expressionists, too harsh.Just my opinion! thanks!

  • @MrsJosephMerrick You're right on many points - I totally agree with you. But I'm not a very big fan of landscapes... btw, I didn't mean to say "frightful" on a very strong way, it's more like you feel so sad that you feel shocked or something like that. Anyway, thanks for your opinion!

  • can't believe that Tiesto copied someone else's work. But both are good and different

  • @rkuanysh actually, what Tiesto did was a sort of his interpretation. Of course most of the people don't know the original version, but he didn't plagiarize Barber's work. There are many versions I've heard, techno and even pop versions, that use classical music, like Vivaldi's Four Seasons, or Puccini's "O Mio Babbino Caro" (Fillipa Giordano version - truly awful), or Schubert's "Ave Maria" (Céline Dion and Beyoncé). I prefer the original version in all of them, without even a comparison.

  • God so moving. Just taps right at your emotions when you hear it.

  • one of the most beautiful, moving pieces of music ever.

  • @tsuikjoshiomatsu couldnt agree more!! he basterdised it with some of those shitty remixes.

  • One of the greatest compositions of the 20th century. The "go to" music for film-makers wishing to convey mourning and despair.

Nice job on the Goya, though could use more of his Black and Disaster paintings, thoroughly more appropriate for this.

  • anyone remember this from risk on ps1?

  • sublime! thank you

  • @zpgJiggleBilly I just find ''The Colossus'' a bit disturbing, maybe some childhood memories hiding in there - but Im fascinated by all Goyas works.

  • @MrsJosephMerrick I think it's sad that you let yourself be frightened of such beautiful paintings.

  • why sould someone do something like that with your family?

  • Im only doing that as a composer if im boored or out of ideas.. Its nothing special to sample a master thats right.

  • Great job Tiesto <3

U have high tech version ;-)

    Baci !

  • Should anyone decide to murder my family, please make sure this song is playing when I discover their remains. Also, please make sure it's raining.

  • Beautiful beautiful piece.

  • Tengo 14 años, y si, soy una adolescente cualquiera, escuché esta cancion en la serie ''El internado'', y me gustó bastante, tranquilos, soy mas de la flaix fm, pero esta.. es especial :)

  • Ikonická skladba..

  • @feneco2 Im also not a fan of landscapes!!!Theyre really boring to me...I was thinking of more imagination and evocative...like John Martin, or the famous Scapegoat painting...or Casper Friedrich...Landscapes with living beings in...not just a landscape... Thanks!.

  • @feneco2 Oh, I really dont agree that this music is frightening. A bit melancholic maybe (which is why I thought you might have chosen the Goyas to go with it, because of his madness), but I think very spiritual and uplifting. There is a joy even in sadness. Perhaps I would chosen paintings which showed diff illustrations of heaven, or landscape, or nightscapes...but I can understand the inner torment perhaps as well - with ref to Goya. Of course The Collossus is an allegoric painting, like ....
