im just gonna dig a hole about 1 foot deep with a diameter of about 3.5 feet and hope for the best.

You don't meed a metal ring,however you can get one at Tractor store or Depot. As far as the number of bricks it looks like he has 14 per level and a total of 5 levels. However mine is going to probably be a bit smaller and only 4 levels. I will probably do 13 per level and 4 high... I am putting on top of pavers so I will just use sand on the base and some pete gravel and maybe an old fireplace grate. No need for a ring for me..
