In addition to shrinking tweets using "text message" style "lingo", you can alternatively elect to upload your tweet, when it exceeds the 140 character count, in its entirety, to TwitterGadget's built-in trunc.it service. TwitterGadget will truncate the tweet, insert a trunc.it link to the full tweet hosted on your behalf, and then post to Twitter.
