http://howtoarchitect.com/ Watch the top 20 reasons to be an architect. Hi. I'm Doug Patt and this is How to Architects Top 20 reasons to be an architect. 20. It's a noble pursuit. 19. It's a noun and verb, an object and an action. 18. It involves a wide array of learning and skill. 17. To stand in front of a building and be the reason for it's being is rewarding. 16. Architecture affects peoples lives in intangible ways. It's like momentum. You can't see it, but you know it's there. 15. Architects are generally creative just about every day. 14. The field of Architecture has been mythologized but it's great dinner party conversation. 13. You have the power to inspire. 12. Architects work with people but if you don't like people there are ways to hide too. 11. Architects keep people safe by making safe places for people to be. 10. Architects and architecture are kind of like the wizard of OZ, behind a curtain but always there. 9. It's a highly prized skill, not always appreciated, quietly revered and it's yours forever. 8. Architects learn something new just about every day. 7. Architects take ideas and turn them into buildings. They make something out of nothing 6. You can do all kinds of things with the education other than just be an architect. 5. You get to draw. 4. You get to learn how things go together, come apart, function and fail. 3. You get to immerse yourself in an intellectually stimulating environment like the university 2. The company you keep with the living and the dead is like non other. There's nothing like learning from or sparring with an architect. 1. Architects are like great painters. They take something simple like an apple or a pear and, with paint, make it more beautiful than it actually is. Just think of a building as a functional box. Then think of how beautiful great architects make them when they make great architecture. I'm Doug Patt, well see you next time.

  • Hey I'm a senior in high school and I have been accepted into a college of architecture. I am so happy that my life dream is one step closer to being fulfilled. But I don't know how much free time I will have with all of the projects in studio and regular classes on top of that. The reason I bring this up is because I wanna join a fraternity. I don't just want join one but I want to get involved with the frat. Do you think it is possible for me to juggle both at the same time. Thanks!

  • @MegaXJay yes. I was in a fraternity - but it wasn't easy.

  • Im not doing well in math in Grade 10 and I need to to take Uni math to become an Architect. Honestly its my passion, when im not doing homework im designing buildings. Any tips Doug?

  • @barod1 yes. follow your dreams!

  • @barod1 also check out the 'could you be an architect' series. I discuss inadequacies in particular subjects and what really matters. All the best!

  • Your channel is just brilliant....I should have subscibed this earlier...!!

  • @yoyoyoy500 ...Architecture is A Process. You can apply Architecture to anything; Music (based on layers of construction), Photography (How you see things), Fashion Designer (Forms), Urban Planner (Vision), many maore....Start looking "into" the definition of Architecture, instead of looking "at" the definition....

  • @ howtoarchitect can you please give examples for reason #6?.Also what do you think of architectural technologists and technicians?.

  • Is it just beauty that compensates for inadequacies? is it there subjectivism behind beauty? who can judge a building better, an architect or its user? what do you want as a designer, to make people live better through your buildings or have your building taken over from people so that they establish a better living? Is it architecture that survives or what it brings to light?

  • @MegaXJay It's not easy, i knew alot of people who tried and failed. or didn't extraordinary well come critique.

Hi I am a graduate student in architecture school. I also had that problem. I am still learning how to draw what I want to express. Although people may tell you that everything is on the computer so don't worry about it, I wold disagree with the whole computers only thing. When drawing: slow down, don't rush, for now use a ruler to help with straight edges, learn how to draw the basic shapes and figure out where the shadows are. Ruler, shapes, shadows. Just to start!!!

  • great video! great reasons :D
