The Honking Tree was cut down by vandals last April 2009. The vandals have not yet been caught.
This song commemorates the estimated 113 year old White Pine.
The tree grew between the lanes of Highway 61 on the North Shore close to Two Harbors, MN.
The tree got it's name from the tradition of honking as motorists passed. Some honked because they were close to their home in Two Harbors, others to celebrate their drive on the North Shore.
Back in the '60s, Charlie Hensley, Superintendent of Highway Construction ordered the tree to be saved from demolition while putting in the new highway and was said to have eaten his lunch at the base of the tree on many occasions.
The Honking Tree was on the National Register.
Beautiful song. It's so sad that a human would destroy be piece on the
GREAT LAKE SUPERIOR northern
shore. Thanks for the memory.
