Thomas Dybdahl - Song to the Siren

Album: Flere Sange Fra 1. Sal (an album featuring various artists)

Lyrics:

On the floating, shapeless oceans
I did all my best to smile
til your singing eyes and fingers
drew me loving into your eyes.

And you sang "Sail to me, sail to me;
Let me enfold you."

Here I am, here I am waiting to hold you.
Did I dream you dreamed about me?
Were you here when I was fox?

Now my foolish boat is leaning, broken love lost on your rocks.
For you sang, "Touch me not, touch me not, come back tomorrow."
Oh my heart, oh my heart shies from the sorrow.

I'm as puzzled as a newborn child.
I'm as riddled as the tide.
Should I stand amid the breakers?
Or shall I lie with death my bride?
Hear me sing: "Swim to me, swim to me, let me enfold you."
"Here I am. Here I am, waiting to hold you."

Original by This Mortal Coil

Further information:

Thomas Dybdahl said in an interview featuring his live version of "Song to the Siren", he told us about his feelings toward the original by This Mortal Coil. He described the situation as was he completely alone, like he was the only one This Mortal Coil was actually playing in front of. He said it was like being unconscious but in a beautiful way. He then couldn't help making his own version of this beautiful song.

  • Although Thomas makes unforgettable songs.... And great ones too, nothing compares to the original from Tim Buckley, father of Jeff.... And yes, the This Mortal Coil version is great too...it's a great tune also fin Thomas's version

  • Helt fantastisk version. Jeg er enig i at den overgår både originalen af Tim Buckley, men også alle de andre fortolkninger. Jeg har pladen "Sange fra 1. sal" og denne sang/fortolkning er mindst en klasse over de 9 andre sange.

  • Beautiful performance. It surpasses all the other singers that have sung this song. Any Norwegian should be proud of Thomas Dybdahl.

  • Incredibly beautiful song.

However, the lyrics you wrote are a bit off at one point. He doesn't sing "were you here when I was full sail?", in fact he sings "were you hare when I was fox?". The lyrics varies from different covers, but these are the original (Tim Buckley's) and the ones Thomas Dybdahl uses. But "full sail" is This Mortal Coil's interpretation.

  • Det er så smukt. Tusind tak for denne sang og dem der gjorde det muligt at optage denne sang. Det er så smukt.

  • if there's anyone in the world who hits the emotion in his expression as you are talking about, it is Thomas Dybdahl!

even at big conserts it sounds and feels lige he stands right next to you, singing the song into your ear...
