The Collaborative Jazz Residency emerged through a partnership between the WNC Jazz Society, the Asheville Area Arts Council, Randolph Learning Center (Asheville City Schools) and local musician Chuck Lichtenberger in response to the amazing commitment of the teachers and funding cuts causing the end of the school's music program. The entire middle school participated in this program, which included about 50 students and six teachers over four days.

Funded through a Mary Duke Biddle Foundation grant received by WNC Jazz Society, Chuck Lichtenberger, Susanne Hackett (AAAC), and Michele Dohse (WNC Jazz Society) worked with Gordon Grant, Cedric Nash, Christie Tongier, Elzy Lindsey, Loralee Iglesias, and John Morris (RLC principal and educators, respectively) to build a program based around Wynton Marsalis' Lincoln Center jazz education program.
