Hurricane Irene Fort Lauderdale, Florida August 25, 2011

Hurricane Irene sideswiped South Florida on it's way up the eastern seaboard. For a while today, Fort Lauderdale Beach looked a little bit like Waikiki.

Well maybe not that rad...but certainly gnarly as it gets in Fort Lauderdale. Here's a quick vid of some of fort Lauderdale's surf crowd loving up on Irene's tubes!

Notice the color of the sky..it was really sick. Could not imagine a Cat 4 hurricane was barreling right by us as we were hanging out on the beach. That doesn't happen all that often. It was nice being out at the beach watching these kids enjoy themselves.

@ogkushmaster100 I guess that depends upon where you are. If you're on the coast of Jersey you had better batten down the hatches. From someone who has been through a lot of hurricanes, you had better get some dry food, some bagged ice, a lot of bottled water, make sure you have a full tank of gas and most importantly get to the bank and get some cash. If you lose power an AM will be useless. Get prepared!

I was at this exact spot (actually Lauderdale-By-The-Sea) 3 days ago, and the waves were just as big. But no storm, no clouds, it was sunny and nice. LBTS seems to have bigger waves than Fort Lauderdale proper for some reason. Hopefully, there will be more big waves when I come back.

@lindsaymratliff lol there was a ton of kooks out there! I was up a bit south of where this person was filming and I can tell you there was tons of beastly surfers out there. Plus the tubes got cleaner than next day.
