American soaps were syndicated worldwide as early as the 1960's. The Edge of Night was especially popular in Canada where it aired over the CBC. This is a short, short close with the CBC announcer voiceover.
As for the date of this clip, I would think it's anytime between 1974 (when the CBC would adopt the "exploding pizza" logo) and Fall 1975 (when Edge would move to ABC, as the clip mentions CBS).
GREG MAY of Orlando, FL says: "Another fan of EON was the late Tallulah Bankhead. She would never leave for rehearsals at the theatre until after EON. When EON first debuted on CBS in 1956, it was aired at 4:30PM EST. In the winter time in NYC, when EON was going off it was already dark. The title was truly fitting. Then in 1963 they moved it to 3:30PM EST. The move to 2:30PM in 1972 was the nail in the coffin because it removed the male audience."
@mrceleb2006 Actually, I was a huge fan of "The Edge of Night" growing up here in Canada. One day at our university library a few months back I searched the local newspaper microfilm to see when "Edge" made its debut on the CBC. Upon reading the local TV listings I discovered it was indeed September 19, 1966...three weeks after I was born. My mom remembers watching this "new" soap opera while changing my diapers.
@brithgob Right. BTW, I didn't know CBC first aired "The Edge of Night" back on September 19, 1966, a decade after it originally premiered on CBS, but my first memory of CBC airing "The Edge of Night" was around 1978-1979.
@mrceleb2006 Correct, the CBC I guess felt compelled to identify the originating network. But what they DIDN'T want on the air I'm guessing were voiceovers that said "Stay tuned for Match Game 74" or whatever came on CBS next.
"The Edge of Night" made its debut over the CBC television network on September 19, 1966 and daytime TV in Canada would never be the same. "Edge" was the first serial to air on a Canadian channel and this would lead CTV to buying the rights in 1970 to "Another World".
The likely reason for this is that the American feeds contained voice-over promos during the credits that the Canadian networks needed to delete... so they might have an old theme song on tape that they would play, along with their own voiceover.
There had to be strange rules about soap theme music in Canada. You know CBC occasionally used the old organ theme during the closing years after it was still being used in the US. Also, CTV never used the actual NBC version of the Somerset them and Another World's open and close music was different on CTV until the show went to an hour.
