The Armada of 1588 is the biggest false story ever told in the English language. During the 19 year war, the Spanish Navy gradually gained the upper hand to the point that Elizabeth's successor, James I sued for peace and signed the treaty of 1604 which was mostly on Spanish terms. In other words, the Spanish won the war.
