An inordinately complex man who has been labeled everything from hero, to charlatan, to sadist, Thomas Edward Lawrence blazed his way to glory in the Arabian desert, then sought anonymity as a common soldier under an assumed name. The story opens with the death of Lawrence in a motorcycle accident in London at the age of 47, then flashbacks to recount his adventures: as a young intelligence officer in Cairo in 1916, he is given leave to investigate the progress of the Arab revolt against the Turks in World War I. In the desert, he organizes a guerrilla army and--for two years--leads the Arabs in harassing the Turks with desert raids, train-wrecking and camel attacks. Eventually, he leads his army northward and helps a British General destroy the power of the Ottoman Empire. Written by alfiehitchie

>> and even the odd Albanian claiming all ancient history is their people and their "culture".
"You owe it to yourself to know the whole truth." Well, I've discovered that the "truth" can be awfully subjective and biased. The winners write the history. How many know that Imperial Japan negotiated for surrender (they had certain provisions, like keeping their emperor)before the Atomic bombs were dropped? How many know that the Cuban missile crisis was provoked by the American missiles in Turkey?

And yes, I've met a lot of Greeks and I know that while Kemal Ataturk is seen as a hero in Turkey he is seen as a brutal conqueror and devil by the Greeks. I know that "Asia Minor" is often refered to as Anatolia and I do know that many Greeks had lived there for centuries.Perhaps you can enlighten me about the Byzantine Empire, which I've heard is just a "modern" name for an empire which always called itself "Roman". All sides lay claim to it, the Greeks, Italians(claiming it was culturally) >>

>>> remembers the Armenian genocide today??" And he had a point. In a world in which he was victorious nobody would bother with his genocide of what he called "Eastern people".
My original post was just mocking the Muslim guy(?) who thought that the Ottomans were the worst in Arab/Islamic history, which is absurd since they were by far the most influental from the 14'th century until the 18'th. I also tried to remind him (her?) that many Arabs willingly fought for the Ottomans.

I know that they were guilty for a lot of murder, and yes I often mention the Armenian genocide to Turks whenever they say they have a "great and noble history" (which sometimes leads to a "fuck you!" from any angered Turk). In fact the Armenian genocide was so overlooked that few knew about it and Hitler used it as an example to justify his own "Generalplan Ost" in which people in Poland and the former USSR were to be driven out, exterminated or used as slave labor. Hitler said: "Who >>>
