  • A few wide shots would help! I was there in 1975.

  • Yea, sad to see it like this. I was there summer '80.

  • Shame to see the remains of Swinders like this ,I was stationed at the old place in 1961 when the station had vampires training the cold war pilots on fast jets . As you you know it was a different Air Force then ,but on reflection I thank my time in the RAF because it stood blokes like myself in good stead for civil aviation. The best training one can ever find ,good luck to you

  • @IRG When the excuse of a government have finally privitised the last remnants there'll be an attack on a certain South Atlantic territory... then they'll realise that privitised Administators, Suppliers, Drivers, Engineers, Technicians, Cooks and Stewards won't fight... and the 29 other RAF staff they have left aren't quite enough... even with our Aircraft carrier shared with gallic friends from the other side of the channel - because we have none of our own left...

  • I remember running up the 'only hill in Lincolnshire'... here and seeing Channel 4 for the very first time in the NAAFI... Signed up 10th August 1982

  • Yes this is a sad sight! My parents were Salvation Army Officers and served at Swinderby during the war . They were on what was known as Red Shield. They were Captain and Mrs Rowland then. They were posted there shortly after my brother was born. It was from there, my parents saw the planes assemble for D Day. My mum is still alive, 98! She would be heart broken to see this. Of all the forces, the RAF was always her favourite. And we should never forget the debt we owe those RAf boys! PD.

  • that building has been demolished now:-(

  • Damn, just realised that I was on my daughters FB acc! on the last post

  • Glad I found this, what a sad sight (site) though, even though I hated my square bashing there I still have some good memories of late 1979 early 80. I belive they used the old married quaters in an episode of the ITV London's Burning with gas cylinders exploding everywhere just after they closed the stn. Sad to see history going to rack and ruin. • God this is spooky. I was here both as a recruit in 1978 12 Flt. Sgt Terry Grindrod was our DI and I did a tour as an SAC Permanent Staff. Group Captain Parker was CO then Gp Capt Preston took over. I remember a Wing Comander Christy was a great guy. I had a great mate SAC John W MacMillan from Stn Med Centre. He later emigrated to Australia. I'd love to know where he is now ???
