I feel that in teaching Chinese, breaking down  a phrase and showing what each word means in English shows much about the culture and therefore much about the language. If, for example, you know, "jump up machine" is helicopter, it makes it easier to remember and you learn the words for "jump, up and machine" for individual future use.
