Author Amy Tan reads from and discusses the fictional "Note to the Reader" from the beginning of her novel, "Saving Fish from Drowning."

-----

On an ill-fated art expedition into Burma, 11 Americans leave their Floating Island Resort for a Christmas-morning tour - and disappear. Through twists of fate they encounter a tribe awaiting the return of a leader and the mythical book of wisdom that will protect them from the ravages of the Myanmar military regime. Tan is the author of "The Joy Luck Club;" "The Bonesetter's Daughter" and "Opposite of Fate." - Book Passage

  • Oooo. Now I want to read this book again. I remember really loving this novel back when it came out.

  • I have brought up the Joy Luck Club on more than one occasion,i have noticed that only the bad cop hareas good people you never hear about a good cop.

  • @Torkulguy

Uh-huh...and how is her writing simplistic? I happen to like the way she tells her stories. I feel like she chooses her wording carefully and knows when and how to leave an emotional impact. As for shallow themes, if you don't like "mother daughter relationships" try reading Saving Fish From Drowning (though it is my least favorite of hers). You seem to really love this Kingston guy though, as you keep bringing him up.

  • @Stellana What makes you think Lordoink likes Twilight? Amy Tan is in the same league as Stephanie Myer: In spite of her relatively simplistic writing with shallow themes, she still makes it as an American best seller. You're assumption on Lordoink came from nothing, mine at least had some ground. Tan is just an incredibly diluted Kingston.

What makes you think I care about Oprah's opinions on...anything, let alone books?

  • @Stellana What does her criticism have to do with the quality of Amy Tan's worth? Amy Tan is just a Maxime Hong Kingston rip off. I bet you read Oprah book of the month literature.

  • @okaminess Yeah...that's my point.

  • @Torkulguy But sometimes there can be beauty in simplistic writing.

  • @Lordoink I'm no fan of Amy Tan either. I feel her writing is incredibly simplistic and has the same themes throughout; however, at least she makes an attempt. The Asian-American population, to me, is misrepresented in America. Every literature class I've ever taken, not once was an Asian- American, or Asian text observed. This is sad, since the east is rich with culture that would be difficult to turn a blind eye to. Like Charles Bukowski's largely simplistic writing, it's at least a start
