What you need to pack in your suitcase for the High Times Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam - A Cannabis Column by Jet Baker
So you're going to the High Times Cannabis Cup. That's frickin awesome! You've watched videos about it; you've heard about it from friends or from friends of friends who've been and you've read about it in High Times Magazine for years. Now you're going to be a Cannabis Cup Judge.
This year will be my 10th Cup. Each Cup is different because of the people attending. It's the people that make the magic happen. (Well, and of course the best weeds in the world right!) This year you are a part of the production. You will be part of the magic. You've cast yourself as an Official High Times Cannabis Cup Judge.
Im writing a series of Cannabis Columns to help prepare you for your journey so you'll be prepared to have the best possible experience. Your adventure starts at home. What you pack in your suitcase can make a big difference in your experience in Amsterdam. Here's what you should pack in your suitcase.
Cash.
OK, you obviously don't pack cash in your suitcase but you will need more cash than you think. I met a couple of dudes from Florida last year who spent most of their money in the first 2 days of the trip. A couple days in the coffee shops and nights in the red light district left these guys near penniless for the rest of the week.
Bring more money than you think you need.
The way to get the best exchange rate is to use your bank card in an ATM machine to get Euros. Currency exchanges will charge you a fee.
Credit cards are not accepted in as many places as in the states so you'll be paying Euros for most things you need. Coffee Shops don't take credit cards. American Express and Discover are accepted in few places. MasterCard and Visa are more widely accepted. Hotels often add an extra fee if you choose to pay for your stay with a credit card.
And I can't say this loud enough - YOU WILL NEED MORE MONEY THAN YOU THINK.
It's true.
OK. Here's what needs to be in your suitcase -
Shoes.
Believe it or not each year some people arrive at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam in flip flops and sandals. I've seen it happen. The beautiful Sara Newton, Miss High Times '07 arrived in sandals. Her first mission in the Dam was to buy some boots. Bless her heart. Bring more than 1 pair of shoes in case one gets wet. Water proof footwear will insure you dry warm feet. If you have wool socks bring em.
And bring warm clothes!
It can be around 80 degrees in November where I live but Amsterdam will be cold and possibly rainy. The dudes I met from Florida last year only had Kottonmouth King hoodies to keep 'em. I mean they were freezing. You will be spending a lot of time outdoors, most of your day. So even it you're extremely lucky and it's 50 degrees every day that's like spending your day in a refrigerator. Ya get cold.
Temps can range from 10 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Bring a warm winter waterproof jacket. You should also bring some high tech underwear, long johns. You'll be glad you did. Wear long sleeve layers.
And dont forget a warm hat and gloves too.
Bottom line - bring warm and waterproof clothing. They'll help keep you warm and dry and healthy for your Cannabis Cup adventure.

Oh and those dudes form Florida, yeah they were broke ass and they were freezing their butts off but you know what? They still had a trip of a lifetime.

OK so im planning on going to Amsterdam in 2012 for the cannabis cup but how do i know where to pick my hotel like so its near coffee shops and not far from the event center???? PLEASE ANSWEAR
@pinkxham1 I went to Amsterdam a few times, mostly the hotel was out of the main loop. But the trains out there take u everywhere so no matter where u at ur like 5 mins away from the main areas.
You are correct. It's not that cold in Amsterdam. But over the years I've seen many kids come from very warm climates in the southern US without the proper jackets, hats etc. I live in the Southwest US where it's very warm and hot. It is much colder than I'm used to at home. I thought I'd error on the side of beeing dressed too warm, you can always take a lyer or 2 off.
