Best in HD. Pieter Bruegel, Hieronymus Bosch, and Matthias Grünewald, backed by Kapsberger. [music: Ciaccone by Kapsberger]

Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1525 - 1569) was a Netherlandish Renaissance painter and printmaker known for his landscapes and peasant scenes. He is nicknamed "Peasant Bruegel" to distinguish him from other members of the Brueghel dynasty, but is also the one generally meant when the context does not make clear which "Bruegel" is being referred to. From 1559 he dropped the 'h' from his name and started signing his paintings as Bruegel.

Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1453 1516), born Jeroen Anthoniszoon van Aken, was an Early Netherlandish painter of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The artist's work is well-known for the use of fantastic imagery to illustrate moral and religious concepts and narratives.

Matthias Grünewald or "Mathis", "Gothart" or "Neithardt" (as surname), (c. 1470 -1528), was an important German Renaissance painter of religious works, who ignored Renaissance classicism to continue the expressive and intense style of late medieval Central European art into the 16th century.

Johann(es) Hieronymus Kapsberger (also: Giovanni Girolamo or Giovanni Geronimo Kapsperger), (c. 1580 17 January 1651) was a German-Italian virtuoso performer and composer of the early Baroque period. A prolific and highly original composer, Kapsberger is chiefly remembered today for his lute, theorbo and chitarrone music, which was seminal in the development of these as solo instruments.

    Ciaccone by Kapsberger

  • Great video. I love the music. Is Bosch the first set of paintings with all of the skeletons and deaths?

  • Thanks, Tilly. The music is rather upbeat for the theme, but I enjoy it more than something suitably funereal.

Most of the paintings are by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, including the first set (The Fall of Rebel Angels) and most of the "skeletal" images (The Triumph of Death).

    Bosch (Garden of Earthly Delights, etc) is at 1:30, 1:42, 1:54, 2:02, 2:06, 2:08, 2:22, 2:44, 2:56, 3:04, 4:18.

    1:34 is Grünewald.

Bruegel had a sense of humour. Look closely at 5:02!

  • Certainly a great job Saphistishe, very Beautiful this video..Thanks to make participates us d.

  • Thanks again, dnadsy. Much of Bruegel and Bosch is macabre, but I find their images quite fascinating.

  • Wonderful video, the Flemish painters are my favorites and I love Kapsberger!*****

  • :) Yes, I see what you mean about 5:02. I guess I should learn to really look at paintings rather than just scan them. This gives a whole new meaning to "the man in the moon".
